法眼文益是法眼宗的创始人。
Fa-yan (Dharma-eye) Wen-yi is the founder of Fa-yan School.
他的悟道、弘法因缘,也广为丛林所传诵。

法眼文益曾约两个同伴去南方参学,在罗汉桂琛禅师那里寄住一宿,第二天辞行。
He has invited 2 companions to go to the South to learn, and stayed a night at Lo-han Gui-chen zen master's place. He took his leave the next day.
桂琛觉得他还可以深造,又不便明白挽留,就指门前一块石头对他说:
Gui-chen felt that he (Fa-yan) can still study further thus didn't clearly kept him, but pointed at a rock at the front of the door and said:

“你是懂得唯识学的,试问这石头是在你的心外还是在心内?”
You know Vijñānavāda studies, please tell me if this rock is outside or inside your heart?
文益说:“在心内。”
Wen-yi said: Inside my heart.
桂琛说:“你是个行脚人,应该轻装前进。为什么安块石头在心内而到处走动?”
Gui-chen said: You are a traveller, should travel light. Why placed a rock within your heart and go everywhere?
文益无言以对,便又留住月余,仍不得其解。
Wen-yi has nothing to say thus he stayed on for rest of the month and still do not understand.
桂琛这才告诉他说:“若论佛法,一切现成。”
Gui-chen then told him: If pertaining to Buddha Dharma, everything is readily available.

文益大悟,终成一代宗师。在他的启发下,不少人都获得了开悟。
Wen-yi deeply realised, and eventually became a great master.
Many became enlightened from his pointing out.
一日,法眼问则监院:“则监院为何不入室参请?”
On day, Fa-yan asked Superintendent Ze: Superintendent Ze, why don't you go inside to seek teachings?
则监院说:“和尚你不知道,我在青林禅师处,已经有了悟境,蒙他印可过了。”
Superintendent Ze said: Reverend you do not know, when I was at Qing-lin Zen master's, already reached realisation plane, with his affirmation is sufficient.
法眼说:“你说给我听听。”
Fa-yan said: You tell to me please.
法眼说:“你说给我听听。”
Fa-yan said: You tell to me please.
则监院说:“我问如何是佛,青林说:‘丙丁童子来求火。’丙丁属火,以火求火,正像我即是佛,更去求佛。”
Superintendent Ze said: I asked what then is Buddha, Qing-lin said: "Bing Ting kumara come fight fire." Bing ting represents Fire, using fire to fight fire, just like I am a Buddha, still go where to seek Buddha.
法眼叹道:“则监院果然理解错了。”
Fa-yan sighed and said: Superintendent Ze comprehended wrongly.
则监院不服气,气呼呼地打起包袱,渡江走了。
Ze was dissatisfied, angrily packed up and left by crossing the river.
法眼说:“这人如果回头,还有救;如果不回头,就没得救了。”
Fa-yan said: this person if turn back, still can save; else can't save him.
则监院走到半途,心想,法眼是一代宗师,还能骗我不成?多半是我错了,于是又回头再参。
Half way on, Ze thought to himself, Fa-yan is a master of this time, still can't lie to me? Most probably is my fault, thus turn back to study again.
法眼说:“你再问我,我为你解答。”
Fa-yan said: You ask me again, I will help you answer.
则监院便问:“如何是佛?”
Ze asked: What then is Buddha?
法眼说:“丙丁童子来求火。”
Fa-yan said: "Bing Ting kumara come fight fire."
则监院于言下大悟。

Upon these words, Ze reached great realisation.
