16-6-2011 GM's on Pets 师尊讲宠物 [English]

This article is found on page 102-5 of Q & A from the Contemporary Dharma King book no. 216

Question:  Can a cultivating person rear pets? How to do we help them?  Why in the Boddhisattva Doctrine states cannot rear pets?

GM said when he was about 20+years old, he took the Boddhisattva's vows at Nantou Bi Shan Yan Si.
Some Zen masters there said cannot rear flying fox species.
As to why, he can't remember already.
GM said he has never has pets so far this life.
In his childhood, the family rear pigs; chickens; not counted pets as those are for family's livelihood.

GM said he is not strictly against those that keep a dog to watch the house or a cat to catch mouse.
GM ask: Don't you feel that rearing dogs、cats need to spend lots of efforts, like food、clothing、accommodation、transport、bath、pee & poo、etc. Time spent is shocking.

The scope of pets for people nowadays are limitless:
fish、bird、tortoise、snake、crocodile、etc.........

An artist loves monkeys. When he bought the second one, the first bit off his nose due to jealousy.
Sea world USA, a killer-whale trainer was killed by the whale he trained with for more than 10 years. The whale's animal/killer instinct rose to the fore.
Las Vegas - White tiger show. Trainer severely injured by the white tiger he performed with for countless years, also due to the instantaneous rise of animal's killer instinct.

When I cultivate in the early days, I set up a shrine.
My Guru, Venerable Liao Ming, told me:
Don't let those that have birthing/bereavement come near.
Don't let chicken & dog come near.
Don't let busybodies come near.
The reason: to maintain the dignity & purity of the shrine.

If you rear pets & cultivating, it is very difficult to maintain the purity or cleanliness of your shrine.
Animals are animals. They have distinctly pungent smell stronger than humans & despite regular baths, and maintaining cleanliness, the pungent smell persist.

My nephew rear a snake. Upon entering his house, the snake's pungent smell rushed towards my nose. If this house were to set a shrine, would the Buddhas & Boddhisattvas grace the shrine with their presence?

I also feel that life is too short, the modern day people lead very hectic lifestyles, added to taking care of pets, where do they find time to cultivate?

Want to help pets, I feel that is best to return them to their original habitat.
Like the chimpanzee/monkeys/pythons back to the forest. Tortoise/fish back to the ocean. Crocodiles back to the swamps. As to domestic dogs & cats, better to gift them to those that don't cultivate.
Everything back to NATURE/ORIGIN.

I hope GM has answered those that keep pets.
Haha!
As a junior fashi of under 2years old, I really don't want to be quoted by people out for mischief & lodge complaints to GM. Although GM knows what everything is about but best not to trouble him.
Also we have to help maintain a Balance in this sentient realm & don't knowingly or unknowingly create unhappiness.
Not everyone meets the 10criteria of a YOGI - please refer to GM's Sword of the Yogi.
For those very politically attuned, please leave me be as I am happy doing what I am doing & not after anything that might interest you all.

Haha! Happy cultivating everyone!
