“Mudita: Selfless Joy,” a short documentary by Chapman Seniors (soon-to-be-graduates), Melvin

Chan, Ben Tanaka, Nafisah Alias, Munira Maricar, Sipei Chan and their American counterpart, Sam Andre, took home the 2013 Cecil Award for Best Documentary Friday night. This marks the second time a Chapman University Singapore film was submitted and nominated and the second time Chapman Singapore has won the award.

The first was for “Transit” in 2011 by then Chapman Singapore seniors, Regina Tan, Eysham Ali, Juvia Chua Hayley Quartermaine, Dan Duran and Emily Manheim.

Both documentaries were produced as part of the Cross Cultural Documentary class in which American students from Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film & Media Arts come to Singapore and work with Singaporean students from their sister school while Chapman Singapore students travel to the U.S. to work on documentaries there. The class in Singapore is taught by Chapman SG’s Rod Plummer along with Chapman Orange’s Sally Rubin.

This isn’t the first time Chapman University Singapore students have won awards – Sepuloh, a narrative film written by Diyannah Mustapha, produced by Geraldine Lee and directed by Sean Ng just picked up the Best Student Short (Foreign) at the International Family Film Festival in Los Angeles.
Congrats to all the recipients of this prestigious award and recognition!
