22-5-2011 少林寺拳法 Shorinji Kempo 【3】


A typical session is as follows:

Warm-up (Taiso)
As in any sports, warming up is important as this will improve your fitness and also prevent injuries.

Focus is to mobilise the major joints of the body (elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, etc.), warm up muscles, and then stretch key areas in preparation for training. As in the rest of your training you should train according to your condition. Do not overt exert yourselves.


Basics (Kihon)
After the warm-up comes basic training, kihon. It starts with the form of single strikes, punches, kicks, blocks, building up into combinations and pair form training (hokei), and sometimes randori (sparring).

Mastering kihon is critical to developing your technical ability as you progress with more sophisticated techniques. To master a combination you need to master each single forms. And this is done by repeating simple movements at every session until you perform them instinctively.

Meditation (Chinkon)
We hold chinkon after kihon
Chinkon is that part of the session which is explicitly given to the spiritual development of Shorinji Kempo. Spiritual development is of equal importance. This is why one of the fundamental in Shorinji Kempo is that mind and body are not trained separately. This meditation is an opportunity to clarify the mind , aided by controlled breathing ( chosoku).

Techniques (Waza)
The last part of the session is dedicated to grade techniques. Usually you will be instructed in techniques appropriate to your grade. Waza is the ideal time to pick up the subtleties and details of techniques.

After the training session, members will usually get together for an informal meal. Although this is entirely optional, it is in fact the most popular activity session in our group as we take this opportunity to bond and build new friendships.

What Pure Karma is planning is a series of movements for matured individuals who needs regular ENCOURAGEMENT to exercise little-used parts of body! Hahaha!

When Pure Karma Vihara opens its door in July 2011 at new premises, we will run a series of program for young & old.
I might even be able to persuade my Mahayana friends to give free counseling & medical consultation too. This we have been doing well before I took refuge in TBS.
