8-fold Discounted Sutra Chanting

Source of article:

There is a son who went to a temple to request ZM Fo-guang to do sutra chanting to delver his late father. ZM prepared the necessaries offerings to chant sutra on the demised behalf.

This filial son is worried about the fees for sutra chanting, thus kept asking the ZM Fo-guang about fees for chanting a chapter of Amitabha's sutra?

佛光禅师看不惯这位孝子悭吝不舍的态度,就不客气地答道;
ZM Fo-guang not accustomed to this stingy attitude of the filial son, unfriendly answered :

“诵一卷阿弥陀经需要十两银子。”
Chant one chapter of Amitabha Sutra needs 10 taels of silver.

Unperturbed, the filial son start to bargain:

“禅师,十两银子太贵了吧!能不能打八折,八两如何?”
ZM, 10 teals of silver is too expensive! Can do a 8-fold discount (Means pay 80% of the asking price), how about 8 taels of silver?

ZM nodded in affirmative: OK!

When the Sutra Chanting ritual was in progress, filial sone heard the ZM chanting:

“十方诸佛菩萨,请将今天诵经的一切功德,回向给亡者,让他能往生东方世界。”
Buddhas & boddhisattvas of the ten directions, please give the merits of today's sutra chanting to the deceased, let him be reborn in Eastern World.

Upon hearing these, the filial son protested to the ZM:

“不对呀!禅师,我只听说过人过世以后往生西方极乐世界,没听说往生到东方世界呀?”
Its not right! ZM, I have heard of deceased going to the Western Paradise after life, never heard of going to the East World?

ZM then said:

“往生西方极乐世界要十两银子,你坚持要八折计算,只好到东方世界去啦!”
To Western Paradise needs 10 taels of silver, you insisted on 8-fold calculation, only can go to Eastern world!

Filial son has no other choice, said:

“我再加二两好了,你还是让我父亲往生西方世界吧!”
I will add 2 taels of silver, please sent my father to the Western Paradise!

At this time, the deceased in the coffin cannot hold it in anymore and loudly scolded his son:

“你这个不肖子,为了省二两银子,害你的老子一下子到东方,一下子到西方,让我东奔西跑,跑得好辛苦啊!”
You, this unfilial son, just to save 2 taels of silver, caused your old man to go to the east this moment and then next moment to the west, let me run all over, real hardship!

Buddha Dharma is not commercial goods, should not treat the same way and bargain.

~~~~~~~
This is a great story and a warning to those that THINK to buy Dharma Power with $$$!
The VIPs and the VVIPs, that pay their ways to be very close to Rinpoche or etc., wake up now!
Hahaha!
Do you still think that Pure Karma or Lotuschef is all out for your $$$?
If you still think so, please continue to do so and stay far far away from us!
Dharma are methods or ways!
Paying lots of $$$ will not help you to understand and use Dharma!
To those that didn't plough in efforts to learn from GM Lu, you have missed the life-boat that is designed specially for you! :)
As to Pure Karma & Lotuschef?
Nah! Too late too to seek me out as well!
Hahaha!
To those that accepted Core's verdict and pronounced that Lotuschef is not a fashi, good luck to you all!
O! Even if you wake up now, without the relevant affinity, you won't be able to enter Pure Karma too!
禅宗公案 Zen Koan – 自伞自度 Own Umbrella Succour Self
Source: 自伞自度
有一个信者在屋檐下躲雨,看见一位禅师正撑伞走过,于是就喊道:
‘禅师!普度一下众生吧!带我一程如何?’
A believer was standing under the roof to shelter from the rain, he called out loudly to a passing Zen Master walking pass with an umbrella:
Zen master! Succour a sentient being please! How about bring me a distance?
禅师道:‘我在雨里,你在檐下,而檐下无雨,你不需要我度。’
ZM said: I am in the rain and you are under the roof, there is no rain under the roof, you do not need me to succour.
信者立刻走出檐下,站在雨中,说道:‘现在我也在雨中,该度我了吧!’
Believer immediately walked out from under the roof and standing in the rain, said: Now I am also in the rain, should succour me already!
禅师:‘我也在雨中,你也在雨中,我不被雨淋,因为有伞;
你被雨淋,因为无伞。
所以不是我度你,而是伞度我,你要被度,不必找我,请自找伞!’
ZM: I am also in the rain, you are also in the rain, I don't get rain upon because have umbrella, you get rain upon because don't have umbrella.
Thus, not I succour you but the umbrella succour me, if you want to be succour, no need to look for me, please go find umbrella yourself!
说完便走了!
After saying these, ZM walked away!
自己有伞,就可以不被雨淋,自己有真如佛性,应该不被魔迷。
Having own umbrella then won't get rain upon, having your own true inherent buddha nature, should not be misled by Mara.
雨天不带伞想别人助我,平时不找到真如自性,想别人度我。
On rainy days don't bring umbrella and thinking to get others to help self, that is do not find own's true inherent buddha nature at all times and expect others to succour self.
自家宝藏不用,专想别人的,岂能称心满意?
Don't use own's treasures, always thinking of others', how to be truly satisfied?
自伞自度,自性自度,凡事求诸己,禅师不肯借伞,这就是禅师的大慈悲了。
Own Umbrella Succour Self, Own nature succour self, all matters seek from self; ZM refused to lend umbrella, this is ZM's great kindness and compassion.
Dear all,
This story is what GM Lu has been stressing all the time: DIY!
GM Lu said that NO ONE can help you cultivate to Buddhahood but yourself!
Human nature is just greedy and lazy to put in due efforts, agree?
The Zen stories shared?
They are for you to go figure them out!
Don't seek answers from me! :)
Bear in mind too that GM Lu said: Enlightenment has no answers!
Hahaha!
If you have been paying due attention to GM Lu's sharings, you will not have to go seek answers from anyone!
The Key is that You have all you need within, Find It!
禅宗公案 Zen Koan – 文殊现身 Appearance of Manjusri
文殊菩萨(梵文:मञ्जुश्री Mañjuśrī),又称文殊师利菩萨、曼殊室利菩萨,亦称妙吉祥菩萨,佛教四大菩萨之一,释迦牟尼佛的左胁侍菩萨,代表智慧。
因德才超群,居菩萨之首,故称法王子。
文殊菩萨的名字意译为 “妙吉祥”;Mañju,文殊或曼殊,意为美妙、雅致,śrī,师利或室利,意为吉祥、美观、庄严。
文喜禅师,朝拜五台山,到达前,晚宿一茅屋,内住一老翁,文喜就问老翁道:‘此间道场内容如何?’
Zen Master WenXi went to pay homage at Wu Tai Shan. Before arrival he stayed the night at a straw hut, which was occupied by an elderly man.
Wenxi asked the elder: This temple's has what details?
老翁回答道:‘龙蛇混杂,凡圣交参。’
Elder answered: Mixture of dragons & snakes, commoners and saints jointly.
文喜问:‘住众多少?’
Wenxi asked: How many staying in?
老翁答:‘前三三、后三三。’
Elder answered: Front three three, back three three.
文喜第二天起来,茅屋不见了,而见文殊骑狮子住在空中,自悔有眼不识菩萨,空自错过。
When Wenxi woke up the next morning, the straw hut has disappeared, only can see Manjusri riding on lion and abiding in the sky, remorseful about not recognising a Boddhisattva, and missed out.
文喜后来参访仰山禅师时开悟,因此就安心住下来担任典座(煮饭)的工作。
Later, Wenxi visited Zen master Yang Shan and become enlightened, thus stay on to take on the task of cook.
一天他从饭锅蒸气上又见文殊现身,便举饭铲打着,并说道:
One day, he saw Manjusri appears from the steam that arose from the rice pot, he raised the rice ladle and hitting it, said:
‘文殊自文殊,文喜自文喜,今日惑乱我不得了。’
Manjusri is Manjusri, Wenxi is Wenxi, today can't mix me up (Means confuse me).
文殊说偈云:‘苦瓜连根苦,甜瓜彻蒂甜,修行三大劫,却被这僧嫌。’
Manjusri said this verse:  Bitter melon even roots are bitter, Sweet melon - sweet to the base, the 3 big kalpas of cultivation, but being repulsed by this monk.
吾人因不明白自己本性,终日心外求法,故患得患失,若能自悟自性,‘文殊自文殊,文喜自文喜’,两者有差异,实则无差异,何必自悔自恼呢?
Most do not know Self nature, always seek externally for dharma, thus delusion of possessed and loss, if realised self nature, then "Manjusri is Manjusri, Wenxi is Wenxi," has no difference actually, thus why Self remorse or self confuse?
文殊的偈语中,不是怕人嫌他,而是在说明三大阿僧祇劫的修行,今天才真正达到知音,有人认识他了。
In Manjusri's verse, he does not fear that people repulse him, but is explaining that through the 3 big asamkya kalpa of cultivation, today can really reach a kindred spirit, someone who recognise him!
原来,文殊文喜,是自他不二啊!
Actually, Manjusri is Wenxi, is him and no duality!
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear all,
Enjoyed the story?

What Dharma Keys have you found and what can be use in furthering your cultivation efforts?

Cheers all.

Moon Boat Monk

The next day, Monk went to the brothel and the geisha was entertaining.
Monk expertly completed the portrait in a few swift strokes and collected the High Fee.

After paying up, the geisha said:
This monk's painting skill is not bad but is heart is dirty, only know to ask money. A work from this polluted heart is not fit to display in the guest hall and only fit to decorate one of my skirts.

She then removed one of her skirts and ask Monk to draw on it.

The Monk agreed as long as she can pay his price.
After drawing, Monk collected his fee and left.

Dear BB,

These are some materials to help you understand Cultivation:-

True Buddha Sutra Visualization
The True Buddha Sutra
Live Cast for 12 July 2014 Event
5-7-2014 Vajrasattva Repentance & Purification Pra...
Pure Karma Cultivation of Vajrasattva Repentance

At the start of Cultivation, we place all beings of the 6 realms together with us in cultivation.
As long as you are sincere in cultivation, and you Trust your Root Guru 100%, you will do well!

The 6-realm mantra joss paper?
Hahaha!
It has powers if you are sincere and knows how to use it for the benefit of all Beings of the 6-realms, which include you too, before you break free from the 6 realms of samsara cycle.

If you relax and believe that you are doing something beneficial for all without prioritising Self, then anything you do will work or be effective.

Do not complicate your life and mind with MORE EFFECTIVE!
Hahaha!
That's the precursor to Suffering in the 6-realms!

Whatever method you cultivate, do it with a Sincere Heart and relax and don't bother yourself about effectiveness.
A Pure Mind is the way to go. :)

I transformed your email into a Zen Koan to share Buddha Dharma.
This way, your email became the Case Study to help others learn Buddha Dharma.
You benefit indirectly from helping these people and therefore your own karmic hindrances decreased!
:)

Most temples or chapters or "teachers" that are Not your root guru or not yet achieved Yoga with any Buddhas or Boddhisattvas, really can't teach you the way of the Buddhas.

If they sell you that you need to pay more $$ to get more blessing or auspiciousness, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

Why I suggest that you donate to charity?
You can give to those that you don't know with a sincere heart, means you broke through Buddha's No Differentiation; Segregation, Discrimination..

You view all as One too!
A Buddha has infinite wisdom & compassion.
This is what all cultivators should arrive at eventually!

Cheers
Hope I have helped you.

Om Guru Lian Sheng Siddhi Hom
Lama Lotuschef ---]

Dear all,

Transformation 变化 is something You can also do when you truly understand HOW to Use your knowledge of Buddha Dharma with Your Diligence in Cultivation WITH a Boddhicitta Wish to be executed for benefit of ALL!

When BB asked for advice in terms of Maximising Liberation effect of 6-realms vajra mantra joss paper, He needs help! His Karmic levels need to be lessened.

So the solution is doing Charity! :)
BB's mindset at that particular Time is not "ideal" to just explain Hard Facts to him! :)
So I shocked him awake first, but also compassionately give him links to learn more about the 6-realms vajra mantra mandala which I had shared widely in my blogs.

Hahaha!

I really didn't desert him from the First! :)

However, most of you painted BB very black!
Bear in Mind though, what You painted BB with, is actually what's You!
A very True Copy of YOU!

Yes! Pretty harsh with all of you? :)

THINK:
What did I shared & taught you all, At the Very Beginning of Cultivation?

Remember How Many times I asked all of you, Any Questions?
No questions!
I said: Either you know all or you don't know what you should know or know nothing at all!

When you join me in Cultivation, I fully explained that I do not encourage anyone that is For Self Only!

GM taught all the same too!
Now Wake-up!

At refuge, What did you vowed?
Doing your best for ALL. remember?

Now why do One cultivate?
What do we do at the very Beginning of a Cultivation session?

Four Immeasurables, correct?
This is Boddhicitta!

So no matter how lousy One's technique at cultivation, just placing All beings of the 6-realms with One in cultivation is Maha Boddhicitta!

Why accused BB lacks Boddhicitta?

You are lacking in Boddhicitta because you do not have compassion for one that seeks advice!

6 realms vajra mantra mandala - I explained this one many time and the visualization when chanting this mantra too!

It benefits All Beings of the 6 Realms!

Can you think that BB knows about the benefit of this mantra, and wants to help liberate more beings?

Hahaha! All hurl negative traits at BB!

But thanks to all your negative missiles against BB, his karmic negatives Markedly Decreased!

The Assignment is a case study geared to Help you open your mind or heart to All, just like a Buddha or Boddhisattva.

Can you not see some good in BB instead?

If BB is not good, means you are not good too!

One is All & All is One?

There are more "problems" but no point pointing them out.

At this present time, most of you don't have the affinity for deeper stuff at all!

Remember, everything GM shares is beyond your depth, therefore comprehend each one thoroughly and not go on wild goose chases of whatever others churned as More Powerful, More Effective!

The rush to grab a copy of GM's book 240 is a very good example of how many don't truly and comprehensively listen to GM!

Why you can't achieve Guru Yoga?

Or for the matter, Yoga with any yidams?

You are missing a very important ingredient, Boddhicitta!

Hahaha!

Whatever others fed you all along, can they use it to benefit all?
Don't think so, agree?
They only churned you a fake version to get your adulation, subservience, obedience, wealth, and make you a slave!

Cheers all.

Francesca Poon Dear Peggy, Hahaha! Reading and Understanding are 2 different matters! I thank you for your advice to change my style of Living!

However, I also humbly suggest you go read some Zen Koans that Guru wrote with Live Subjects and other Koans by other Zen masters.

Do not only glean the Surface only. Hahaha! Amituofo!]

It seems most people think that analysis of a subject to incite Deep thoughts is consider as Talking Bad, Criticize, Pointing Fault (I don't understand this one, its from Peggy above.)

For most TBS' students, each of us had at least read One of Guru's books or watch a video of an event or attended one of Guru's event too, what is Guru doing all this time?

How many times, Guru said: I will leave it to the Saintly Students to answer this question?

Telling Jokes and stories of real live subjects but using a common name to keep the subjects' identities confidential!

Read about Zen Koan and I sincerely hope you add the category of Zen Koan to your portfolio of Nouns to use in future when you are going to make a pronouncement of Great Import!

Of course if the word ZEN frightens you at sight, then perhaps you need to work harder at Resource Path that Guru taught us to build Affinity and Neutralize Karmic Negatives!

Cheers! Om Guru Lian Sheng Siddhi Hom!

kōan (play /ˈk.ɑːn/Chinese: 公案; pinyingōng'ànKorean: 공안 (kong'an);Vietnamesecông án) is a storydialogue, question, or statement, which is used in Zen-practice to provoke the "great doubt", and test a student's progress in Zen practice.

The word koan, literally "public case", comes from the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese characters (公案).

Etymology

Kōan is a Japanese rendering of the Chinese term (公案), transliterated kung-an (Wade-Giles) or gōng'àn (Pinyin).

Chung Feng Ming Pen (中峰明本 1263–1323) wrote that kung-an is an abbreviation for kung-fu an-tu (公府之案牘, Pinyin gōngfǔ zhī àndú, pronounced in Japanese as kōfu no antoku), which referred to a "public record" or the "case records of a public law court" in Tang-dynasty China.[1][2][a] Kōan/kung-an thus serves as a metaphor for principles of reality beyond the private opinion of one person, and a teacher may test the student's ability to recognize and understand that principle.

Commentaries in kōan collections bear some similarity to judicial decisions that cite and sometimes modify precedents. An article by T. Griffith Foulk claims

...Its literal meaning is the 'table' or 'bench' an of a 'magistrate' or 'judge' kung.[2]

Kung-an was itself originally a metaphor — an article of furniture that came to denote legal precedents. A well-known example of this legal usage is The Cases of Judge Dee (狄公案 Di Gongan in Chinese), a Ming dynasty novel based on a historical Tang dynasty judge. In the same way, Zen kōan collections are public records of the notable sayings and actions of Zen disciples and masters attempting to pass on their teachings.

Origins and development

Historical antecedents of koan-practice

Before the tradition of meditating on kōans was recorded, Huangbo Xiyun (720–814) and Yun Men (864–949) are both recorded to have said, "Yours is a clear-cut case (chien-cheng kung-an) but I spare you thirty blows," seemingly passing judgment over students' feeble expressions of enlightenment.

By the Sung Dynasty, the term kung-an had taken on roughly its present meaning. According to Foulk, Xuedou Zhongxian (雪竇重顯 980–1052) — the original compiler of the 100 cases that later served as the basis for the Blue Cliff Record — used the term kung-anjust once in that collection, in Case #64.[2]

Yuanwu (圜悟克勤 1063–1135), compiler of the Blue Cliff Record (碧巌録) in its present form, "gained some insight" by contemplating (kan) kōans.[4][5] Yuanwu may have been instructed to contemplate phrases by his teachers, Chen-ju Mu-che (dates unknown) and Wu-tzu Fa-yen (五祖法演 ?-1104).

Encounter dialogue

Kōans and their study developed in Chinawithin the context of the open questions and answers of teaching sessions conducted by the Chinese Chán masters. The recorded encounter dialogues, and the koan collections which derived from this genre, mark a shift from solitary practice to interaction between master and student:

The essence of enlightenment came to be identified with the interaction between masters and students. Whatever insight dhyana might bring, its verification was always interpersonal. In effect, enlightenment came to be understood not so much as an insight, but as a way of acting in the world with other people[6]

This mutual enquiry of the meaning of the encounters of masters and students of the past gave students a role model:

One looked at the enlightened activities of one's lineal forebears in order to understand one's own identity [...] taking the role of the participants and engaging in their dialogues instead[7][b]

Literary practice

Koan practice developed from a literary practice, styling snippets of encounter-dialogue into well-edited stories. It arose in interaction with "educated literati".[8] There were dangers involved in such a literary approach, such as fixing specific meanings to the cases.[8]Dahui Zonggao is even said to have burned the woodblocks of the Blue Cliff Record, for the hindrance it had become to study of Chán by his students[9] Kōan literature was also influenced by the pre-Zen Chinese tradition of the "literary game" — a competition involving improvised poetry.[10]

The style of writing of Zen texts has been influenced by "a variety of east Asian literary games"[11]:

The extensive use of allusions, which create a feeling of disconnection with the main theme;

Indirect references, such as titling a poem with one topic and and composing a verse that seems on the surface to be totally unrelated;

Inventive wordplay based on the fact that kanji (Chinese characters) are homophonic and convey multiple, often complementary or contradictory meanings;

Koan-practice

Study of kōan literature is common to all schools of Zen, though with varying empahsises and curriculae.[12] A kōan or part of a kōan may serve as a point of concentration during meditation and other activities, often called "kōan practice" (as distinct from "kōan study", the study of kōan literature). Kōan may consist of a perplexing element or a concise but critical word or phrase (話頭 huàtóu) extracted from the story. It may also refer to poetry and commentary added to the story by later Zen teachers.

Instructions for kōan-practice

A qualified teacher provides instruction in kōan practice in private.

In the Wumenguan (Mumonkan), public case #1 ("Zhaozhou's Dog"), Wumen (Mumon) wrote:

...concentrate yourself into this 'Wú'... making your whole body one great inquiry. Day and night work intently at it. Do not attempt nihilistic or dualistic interpretations."[13]

Arousing this great inquiry or "Great Doubt" is an essential element of kōan practice. To illustrate the enormous concentration required in kōan meditation, Zen Master Wumen commented,

It is like swallowing a red-hot iron ball. You try to vomit it out, but you can't.

Testing insight

A kōan may be used as a test of a Zen student's ability. For monks in formal training, and for some laypersons, a teacher invokes a kōan and demands some definite response from a student during private interviews. Kōans are often presented with the teacher's unique commentary. A kōan may seem to be the subject of a talk or private interview with a student. The dialog, lecture, or sermon involving the kōan may resemble a performance, ritual duty, or poetry reading.

Teachers may probe students about their kōan practice using "checking questions" to validate an experience of insight (kensho) or awakening. Responses by students have included actions or gestures, "capping phrases" (jakugo), and verses inspired by the kōan.

The meaning of a kōan can only be demonstrated in a live experience. Texts, including kōan collections and encyclopedia articles, cannot convey that meaning, though understanding the context from which koans emerged can remove some of the mystery surrounding a kōan. For example, when a monk asked Zhaozhou (Joshu) "does a dog have Buddha-nature or not?", the monk was referring to the understanding of the teachings on Buddha-nature, which were understood in the Chinese context of absolute and relative reality.[14][15][c]

Appropriate responses to a kōan vary, since different teachers may demand different responses to a given kōan, and the answers may vary by circumstance. One of the most common recorded comments by a teacher on a disciple's answer is: "Even though that is true, if you do not know it yourself, it does you no good."[who?] The master is not looking for a specific answer but for evidence that the disciple has grasped the state of mind expressed by the kōan itself.

Therefore, although there may be "traditional answers" (kenjo 見処 or kenge 見解) to many kōans, these are only preserved as exemplary answers given in the past by various masters during their own training. In practice, many answers could be correct, provided that they convey proof of personal realization. Kōan training requires a qualified teacher who has the ability to judge a disciple's depth of attainment. In the Rinzai Zen school, which uses kōans extensively, the teacher certification process includes an appraisal of proficiency in using that school's extensive kōan curriculum. In Japanese Zen, Chinese Ch'an, Korean Seon, Vietnamese Thien, and Western Zen, kōans play similar roles, although significant cultural differences exist.

Varieties in koan-practice

Chinese Chán and Korean Seon

In Chinese Chán and Korean Seon, the primary form of Koan-study is hua-tou, "word head".[16] In this practice, a fragment of the koan, such as "mu", or a "what is"-question is used by focusing on this fragment and repeating it over and over again:[17][18]

Who is it who now repeats the Buddha's name?

Who is dragging this corpse about?
What is this?
What is it?
What was the original face before my father and mother were born?

Who am I?[web 1]

The student is assigned only one hua-tou for a lifetime.[16]

In contrast to the similar sounding "who am I?" question of Ramana Maharshi, hua-tou involves raising "great doubt":[web 2]

This koan becomes a touchstone of our practice: it is a place to put our doubt, to cultivate great doubt, to allow the revelation of great faith, and to focus our great energy.[16]
