燃燈古佛,又叫“定光佛”。

屬過去佛之一。是在過去世為釋迦菩薩授記的佛陀。
音譯提和竭羅、提洹竭。
又作定光如來、錠光如來、普光如來、燈光如來。
《過去現在因果經》卷一記載,此佛初生之日,四方皆明,日月火珠復不為用。以有此奇特,故名為普光。《大智度論》卷九亦雲,燃燈佛生時,一切身邊如燈,故名燃燈,成佛後亦名燃燈。
《大智度論》曰:“如燃燈佛,生時一切身邊如燈,故名燃燈太子,作佛亦名燃燈。”。
燃燈佛於釋迦牟尼過去世為其授記,說:“善男子,汝於來世,當得作佛,號釋迦牟尼”。根據“劫世”理論,燃燈應生在過去世“莊嚴劫”,並預言九十一劫後成佛號釋迦牟尼。
依《修行本起經》卷上所述,往昔,提和衛國(Di^pavati^)有聖王,名燈盛。臨命終時,將國政囑付太子燈(錠)光,太子知世間無常,更將國政授與其弟,即時出家。成佛後,【yixia.net】世界,開化群生。是時有梵志儒童,值燈光佛游化,乃散花供佛,並解髻布發於泥道上,請佛蹈之,佛乃為儒童授來世成佛之記。此儒童即釋迦牟尼佛。《增一阿含經》卷十三、《四分律》卷三十一等,亦述及燃燈佛之本緣,但所說略有差異。
另據《賢愚經》卷三〈貧女難陀品〉所載,過去久遠二阿僧只九十一劫,閻浮提有大國王,名波塞奇。王有太子名勒那識只(即寶髻),出家學道而成佛。時比丘阿梨蜜羅日日燃燈供養彼佛,佛乃為比丘授記,告知當來成佛,名定光如來。此系燃燈佛昔時曾從寶髻佛受記之因緣。
關於此佛出現之時劫,《增一阿含經》卷十三、《佛本行集經》卷三〈發心供養品〉等,單說過去久遠劫;《修行本起經》卷上、《太子瑞應本起經》卷上等,則謂系在過去九十一劫。
燃燈佛為過去佛中之最著名者,在諸經論中,頗多以此如來為中心而說其前後出現諸佛之事例者。如《無量壽經》謂過去久遠劫,錠光如來出世,教化眾生,其後歷經十劫,依次出現五十三佛。最後之世自在如來時,修因行而成道者即為阿彌陀如來。《大悲經》卷三〈殖善根品〉謂此如來以後,有蓮華上佛乃至過去七佛等,總有十四佛出世。《大毗婆沙論》卷一七八更說釋尊於第三阿僧只劫曾遇七萬七千佛,其中之首位,即為燃燈佛。
依《大唐西域記》卷二所述,北印度那揭羅曷國有釋尊供養燃燈佛而受記之遺跡。今印度山崎(Sanchi)塔門之刻畫中,有定光如來化作大城之圖像,此與《四分律》所述相合。

Dīpankara (Sanskrit and Pali Dīpaṃkara, "Lamp bearer") is one of the Buddhas of the past. He is said to have lived on Earth one hundred thousand years ago.
Theoretically, the number of Buddhas having existed is enormous and they are often collectively known under the name of "Thousand Buddhas".
Each was responsible for a life cycle.
According to some Buddhist traditions, Dīpankara was a Buddha who reached enlightenment eons prior to Gautama Buddha, the historical Buddha.
Generally, Buddhists believe that there has been a succession of many Buddhas in the distant past and that many more will appear in the future; Dīpankara, then, would be one of numerous previous Buddhas, while Gautama was the most recent, and Maitreya will be the next Buddha in the future.
Chinese Buddhism tends to honor Dīpankara as one of many Buddhas of the past. Dīpankara, Gautama, and Maitreya are "the Buddhas of Three Times".
