禅宗大德故事 Zen School Bhadanta Tales - 隐居地方 A Place to Live in Retreat

无德禅师，为首山省念禅师法嗣，南岳下九世，曾住汾阳太子院，举扬临济宗风，天圣二年示寂。
　　无德禅师善昭（947～1024），为首山省念禅师法嗣，南岳下九世。曾住汾阳（山西省汾州）太子院，举扬临济宗风。天圣二年示寂，谥号“无德禅师”。

　　《汾阳善昭禅师语录》善昭撰，石霜楚圆编。收于《大正藏》第四十七册。又作《汾阳无德和尚语录》、《无德和尚语录》、《汾阳录》。建中靖国元年（1101）附跋重刊。现存本系至大三年（1310）的重刊本。http://www.fo5.cn/gushi/fo/22/833.html

无德禅师一向在行脚，一天来到佛光禅师处，佛光禅师对他说：‘你是一位很有名的禅者，可惜为什么不找一个地方隐居呢？’
ZM Wu-de is a travelling master, one day he came to ZM Fo-guang's place, ZM Fo-guang asked him: you are a well known zen practitioner, sad why you do not find a place for retreat to live?　　　　
　　　　

无德禅师无可奈何的答：‘究竟那里才是我的隐居之处呢？’
ZM Wu-de can't help but replies: actually where then is a place for me to live in retreat?　　　　
　　　　 

佛光禅师道：‘你虽然是一位很好的长老禅师，可是却连隐居之处都不知道。’
ZM Fo-guang said: Although you are a good senior zen master, but don't even know a place to live in retreat.　　　　
　　　　 

无德禅师说：‘我骑了三十年马，不料今天竟被驴子摔下来。’
ZM Wu-de said: I have been riding horses for 30 years, but today got thrown down by a donkey.　　　　
　　　　 

无德禅师在佛光禅师处住下来，一天，有一学僧问道：‘离开佛教义学，请禅师帮我抉择一下。’
ZM Wu-de stay on at ZM Fo-guang's place. One day, a student monk asked: Outside of Buddhist school's concepts, please help me make a decision.　　　　

　　　　 

无德禅师告诉他道：‘如果是那样的人就可以了。’

ZM Wu-de said to him: If it is that type of people can already.

　　　　　　

学僧刚要礼拜，无德禅师说：‘你问得很好，你问得很好。’
Just as student monk wants to pay his respect, ZM Wu-de said: What you asked is good, what you asked is good.　　　
　　　　 

学僧道：‘我本想请教禅师，可是．．．’

Student monk: I originally wanted to seek teaching from zen master, but....
　　　　　　

无德禅师道：‘我今天不回答。’

ZM Wu-de said: Today, I won't answer.
　　　　　　

学僧问：‘干净得一尘不染时又如何呢？’

Student monk: When clean to the stage that even one speck of dust won't dye then how?
　　　　　　

无德禅师答道：‘我这个地方不留那种客人。’

ZM Wu-de said: This place don't keep or retain this type of guest.
　　　　　　

学僧问：‘什么是您禅师的家风？’

Student monk asked: What is Zen master's style/tradition (Family wind - lifestyle or tradition)
　　　　　　

无德禅师说：‘我不告诉你。’

ZM Wu-de said: I won't tell you.

　　　　　　

学僧不满的责问说：‘您为什么不告诉我呢？’

Student monk questioned unsatisfactorily: Why won't you tell me?
　　　　　　

无德禅师也就不客气的答道：‘这就是我的家风。’
ZM Wu-de also not politely replied: This then is my style.　　　　
　　　　 

学僧更是认真的责问道：‘您的家风就是没有一句话吗？’
Student monk even more seriously questioned: Your style is don't have even a sentence?　　　　
　　　　 

无德禅师说：‘打坐！’

ZM Wu-de said: (Hit seat - means to sit down) Meditate!
　　　　　　

学僧更顶撞道：‘街上的乞丐不都在坐着吗？’

Student monk even more contradictory: Aren't all the beggars in the streets sitting down?
　　　　　　

无德禅师拿出一个铜钱给学僧。

ZM Wu-de took out a copper coin and gave it to student monk.
　　　　　　

学僧终于省悟。
Student monk finally have sudden realisation.　　　　
　　　　 

无德禅师再见佛光禅师报告说道：‘当行脚的时候行脚，当隐居的时候隐居，我现在已找到隐居的地方！’
When ZM Wu-de again meet up with ZM Fo-guang to give a report, he said: When Travelling (Moving legs) travel, when in retreat then retreat, I have now found a place to live in retreat!　　　　
　　　
　　　　

自古以来的禅僧，有的行脚云水，有的陆沉隐居，有的躲藏盛名之累，入山惟恐不深，有的接待十方，等待有缘的传灯之人。

As of old, Zen monks have those travelling, those live in retreat at certain places, those that hide from the drag of fame, fearing the mountain that they enter is not deep enough, those that receive from ten directions (means all over), waiting for the one with affinity to pass on the light.

究竟怎么做才是禅僧真正的生活行止呢？

Actually what should a zen monk really do as the true life's style?

正如无德禅师说：‘当行脚的时候行脚，当隐藏的时候隐藏。’
Just as ZM Wu-de said: When travelling travel, when in retreat then retreat/hide.
