佛陀在《長阿含經》裡面就有這樣的開示：

[什麼才是稱得上真正的沙門修行人呢？
What then is True Sramana cultivator?
佛陀在《長阿含經》裡面就有這樣的開示：
Buddha shared in <Dirgha Agama> :
「佛說涅槃最，不以除鬚髮、害他為沙門」。
[Buddha said Nirvana is Utmost, Not dependent upon shaving off hair & beard, Differentiated to be Sramana.]
Means: Cultivate to Realize Nirvana as principle directive.
Not dependent on whether a person has shaved off his hair and beard!
That is to say, even if someone shaved off his hair & beard, but do not truly study the Truth of Nirvana, actually this someone cannot be term as True Sramana, only as Posing as a Sramana.

佛教中的沙门
在《佛说大迦叶问大宝积正法经》中有提到四种沙门：
行色相沙门：如果有出家人剃发的模样，但身口意行却都不清净，
密行虚诳沙门：也有人在佛教之中出家，虽然表面装出很有威仪的样子，
求名闻称赞沙门：贪求名声而外表像是有持戒的人，希望因此得到他人的赞叹。
在《瑜伽师地论》对沙门的分类
胜道沙门
论道沙门
命道沙门(说道沙门)
污道沙门(坏道沙门)

意思是修行是以證悟涅槃本際為修行之主旨。
並不是以他是不是除掉鬚髮來作為分別的。
Means: Cultivate to Realize Nirvana as principle directive.
Not dependent on whether a person has shaved off his hair and beard!
也就是說如果有人剃除了鬚髮，如果他沒有真正探討到涅槃本際的時候，
事實上他也不能稱為真正的沙門 ，只能說是表相的沙門；
That is to say, even if someone shaved off his hair & beard, but do not truly study the Truth of Nirvana, actually this someone cannot be term as True Sramana, only as Posing as a Sramana.
相反，那如果有人是留了鬚髮的，可是他可以探討到涅槃本際這個最殊勝的法，
他也可以稱為是真正的沙門。]
On the other hand, those that retain their hair & beard, but they truly study and realized the Truth of Nirvana being the most Elemental Method, these people can then be termed True or Genuine Sramana.
沙门那、沙迦懑曩、室摩那弩、舍罗摩弩，意译为道士，道人，贫道等，
佛教中的沙门
虽有佛教出家的外表装扮，但内心及言行不能真正符合沙门的所思所想所做，
所以不能称作真正实义的沙门。
在《佛说大迦叶问大宝积正法经》中有提到四种沙门：
行色相沙门：如果有出家人剃发的模样，但身口意行却都不清净，
徒具沙门形相而无实质，称作行色相沙门
密行虚诳沙门：也有人在佛教之中出家，虽然表面装出很有威仪的样子，
来蒙骗赚取世间人的尊敬，但事实上心中却贪爱世间法、执著人我的表相，
对于解脱道所说世间一切法无常、苦、空的道理，不能信受，不能亲证，
所以不喜爱也不愿离开世间的种种法。这种人就称为密行虚诳沙门
求名闻称赞沙门：贪求名声而外表像是有持戒的人，希望因此得到他人的赞叹。
实行沙门：不求名闻利养、能证解脱果。
