i use to make this prayer when pouring oil in common Mahayana temple "may this light always light up all the sentient beings' life. Lead us to Boddhi path from every life time till attain Buddhahood..then make my own wish" so as long as the lamp oil in the temple is still lighting, then the prayer will also last he7..just my own self-affirmation.
no matter how long the light will last, we always have choice to lit it up again.

Just like the old lady story, she gave all her have just to offer Buddha a light. When Mara tried to blow all the lamp, only the old lady's lamp that was still lighting. I don't know what wishes that the old lady made, but i think once you sincerely offer something to Buddha (in this case : lamp), nothing will hinder the light lighting up, not even Mara or Time itself.

the oil will run out, but the light will still light up in Buddha's eyes,

A: I guess you are not referring to all the physical light lamps that we will be lighting up this sunday.
It is our internal heart lamp that matters, keep it burning indefinitely and shower all the sentient beings with warmth and light.

We will be lighting them on 31-12-2011 which is a Saturday. U guess right! I am referring to the lamp within, that is our Heart Chakra. I also asked: How to keep it burning infinitely and you are right too with the Boddhicitta angle of lighting up to share/shower all with Warmth & Light.
