Hi Fashi, in my personal opinion, 'refuge taking' in Tantrayana
has a special meaning than other tradition. The core belief is the Root Guru
has already attained Buddha-hood in this life time, that's why it is so
precious.. Other tradition such as Theravada, does not admit sort of
faith. I read your writings "The Reverend that performed the refuge taking
ceremony is not the one you take refuge in" , I'm confused. As Tantrayana
disciple, if the reverend as Root Guru , is not the person we taking refuge of,
so what's the purpose of doing it?

In tantrayana, Gm said: you only learn from him, as he is Root Guru, but actual
refuge is in individual's Buddha nature, the 3 kayas. likewise in theravada, we
take refuge in 3 gems n not the reverend.
GM has also stressed that don't admire
the person called Lu Sheng Yen. He said this several times.
For us
in TBS, refuge taking is truly a meaningful one. Because Our Root Guru is a
Living Buddha.
Some masters in our sector tried to woo fellow disciples to be
their own. I am truly sorry for those that desert GM as Root Guru and chose
these errant disciples of GM.
We have a good teacher unlike some that were
encouraged to Self Immolate.
I humbly
suggest that to understand refuge taking, go read GM's article on them.

The person in the article is from Theravada and the
reverend that performed the refuge taking has been found guilty of
misappropriating Public funds and lying to the Public too. He has been
apprehended by the Law of the country. As to breaking precepts n etc., not up
to us to say anything.
I took
refuge in a Mahayana temple and the abbot performed the ceremony for me. That
doesn't mean his is my Guru. Because it is clearly stated that refuge is in the
Triple gems.
But in TBS, refuge is in Root guru n triple gems. GM often
stresses that One must learn from those TRUE Acharya who has attained
enlightenment n not those that can't even yoga with any Divinities.
Dear
lotus funglie, understanding what Root Guru stands for n not a Reverend with a
fixed form.
In Tantrayana, Root Guru is our link to all universal beings and
also the key to unlocking our own Buddha Nature. Our Root Guru has all the 3
Kayas, which one link us to the Universe? hehehe!
We have
distance empowerment & also refuge taking, who then did these and made them
"effective"?
What do
you think is the purpose of taking refuge in Tantrayana? Hehehe!
Some reverend
asked you to kneel and you chant the 4 refuge vows n then Root guru's mantra.
These reverends are not your Root guru but they are supposed to invoke the
presence of Root Guru to give your empowerment n blessings.
Most have yet to be
able to invoke presence of Root Guru too, are you all aware?
Why take
refuge?
Ask yourself:
What do I hope to gain from TBS?
What can TBS do for me?
Then eventually, What can I do for TBS and all sentient beings? T
hen you are
ready to take refuge in the Truest sense! Amituofo.

My 1 cent worth of tots:
In Vajrayana, Root Guru symbolise the
manifestation of the 3 Gems and bring liberation to sentient beings. W/o Him,
we will not know the existence of any Buddha, Bodhisattva and the Dharma wisdom
that can stop our Wheel of Samsara.
So it is better to see our Guru in this
perspective, and when we practise based on what He teaches, we can verify tat
wat we experience along the cultivation correspond well with the truths stated
in the Sutras.
Along the way the faith will grow stronger and have a deeper
understanding why GM said tat He has never left us
True or
false pertaining to slanders or comments about GM has no meaning at this point

we tell this person that he did not take refuge with the Reverend that
conducted the ceremony. He took refuge with the Triple Gems.
Which is the Truth
and also at his level, this should be easy to digest!
Psychologically, the
Truth should ease his troubled mind about the reverend's criminal actions
I hope
that his knowing that he didn't take refuge with a Criminal should ease his
worries/sufferings n also let him go find out the truth and cultivate.
But I am also
out to let him see other viewpoints n not get too fixated about refuge taking.
Dear steven gives a very clear explanation of What Root Guru stands for.
When
explaining Zen sutra of 6th Patriarch - GM said you open up our heart n let
Buddha reside within in the lotus in your Heart Chakra.
GM resides within each
one of us too, teaching us and guiding us
One has
to think of Gm & bring him to mind frequently.
That is so simple! How many
are doing it?
M has
"seeing" ability. When I ask H to chant Guru's mantra silently, H
lighted up.
His aura started to shine outwardly too.
M said she saw H's heart
chakra gets brighter n brighter with light.
Chanting mantra is beneficial n
Guru's mantra should be chanted regularly.
Believe or not up to you. Hahaha!

remember GM said...See Him as a Buddha, one will receive the Blessing of the
Buddhas. See Him as a commoner, u receive the blessing of a commoner.
So if one
is intensively practising for the sake of liberation, he will see GM as a REAL BUDDHA
who can liberate him. If one practise with worldly intentions in mind, then he
will fail to see the truth manifestation of GM and likely to deviate from His
teaching.
I talked rubbish and get
people confused because they never expect me to sprout nonsense! hahaha!
Well,
don't look at external form!
I didn't sprout rubbish but just gives a
suggestion to look from other angles only.
Bringing in the 3 kayas also
confused lots of people, but like steven said: Gm represents all.
But I wish to
add this is only till u find your own. Do you agree with me, steven?
Nino Candra That's true, I guess the
simplest explanation could be like GM being the doctor who prescribes medicines
to cure your ailment, or a teacher bringing out the best in you.
There is a
mutual connection here, but will merge together in the end.
His
faith in GM now is entirely different from his initial faith when he just took
refuge.
One see his Buddha Nature correspondent with GM's and tats why he
believe why GM said tat
He has never left us
Fashi. I think it is very
important to stressed out that GM , our Root Guru, is the manifestation of 3
Gems in one living body, this is why Root Guru in Tantrayana is so precious,
while other Buddhism mainstream tradition do not adopt such belief. Because of
so, we can not took comparison with other tradition, without GM/Root Guru
empowerment, one can not exceed all obstacles in cultivation path, every
cultivation will be meaningless.
I remember story told by GM, once upon Marpa
Acarya's Yidam and Root Guru appears in the sky, he took homage to his Yidam's
first rather than his Root Guru Naropa.. one mistake that he regret ever since.

For the beginner Tantrayana
disciple , include me, such a realization is yet so far away, 只能意会, if not
careful enough maybe 'Root Guru' will just be a trimmer, not the maincause.. my
humble suggestion, maybe you could extense more this article , it will be more
complete.
Thank you again to Fashi and brothers/sisters , I learn so much from
this.. others criticize we are bunch of cult worshipper.. but how much do they
willing to open their heart to know even more what is GM teachings? Amitofo...

newbie too! hehehe! Took refuge 3-8-2008. 3-year old TBS student. We can never
learn all of Buddha's teachings as those huge volumes of Dharani boggles one's
mind n that one is myself!
Compassionate Buddha has plan B & Plan C, in the
form of Diamond sutra and best of all, Heart sutra - a condensation of vital
principles of Buddhism.
Remember though, Ultimately all these exist only for
those that need them to guide them along the Bodhi path and once their purpose
"expires", Dharma "disappeared". Don't get too stuck on certain
principles until you choke yourself as well as those around you.
Trying to ease
the suffering of the subject in question, I tried to explain some Basic truth
but upon hearing who our Root Guru is, this person turned against us. Hahaha!
This is ignorant sentient beings and their affinity has not mature enough to
accept the Dharma.
The point is we tried to ease his suffering and that is
enough.
We all had fun chewing on this matter of taking refuge anyway. Hahaha!
Instead
of giving you a straight answer, I bombarded you with more aspect and angles to
look at this matter.
I am sure now you will never forget what refuge taking is.
