The recent Dharma King Test - well, GM has quoted a story in similar vein.
Book 220 pages 86-9.
One day, a group of people went to Buddha's residence.
One of them was holding a bag. He climbed a tall tree outside the residence & hang the bag at the topmost branch & carefully climbed down.
These group of people said: All Buddha's disciples have Transcendental Powers, we came today to see that. Which revered one can show us Transcendental Powers, please give it a try!
All Buddha's disciples were silently sitting. Only B stood up, walked to the tree, lifted his head & looked up at the hanging bag.
The crowd shouted: Fly up & get the bag down!
B can't control himself & lightly flew up, higher & higher, with beautiful posture, lifted the bag & then flew down, standing erect on the ground.
The crowd clapped & cheered like the roar of thunder.
B was so satisfied with himself & then he went back to his vihara.
Buddha heard about the incident & send for B.
Buddha said: The worse kind of demonstration. Bend crookedly the Ultimate of Cultivation. Transcendental Power is not the Ultimate. Evil demon off-track path. Not kids' games. Cannot use inappropriately.
Final reprimand: B stays forever in sentient realm as punishment, cannot go to the 4-holy realm, cannot go to Heavenly realm, everlastingly penalised to stay in the sentient realm.
Till today, when there are offerings to all Sanghas, there is the topmost seat left empty for B.

Well, I felt funny about the Dharma King test & I went to dig out this article.
Of course we can practice in private but there is no need to show to the world whether we are genuine or not. Unlike those that go for fame & recognition, they are motivated by the 3 poisons where GREED is rearing its UGLY HEAD at the top of list of motivation.
Seeing how Buddha treats showing off of Transcendental Powers, do you think screening of True Dharma Kings is necessary?
Each of us bear our own Karma, therefore when people get cheated by fake self proclaimed Dharma Kings & etc, it is their Karmic influence with the fakes. Have you thought of matters in this VIEW point?
Time to truly spend time to study the 8-fold Paths.
When you get cheated - you either owe them in your previous life or they are going to owe you & resulting in their going into the Lower realms of afterlife & remain in the reincarnation cycle till they cleared their debts to you and others.
Some went beyond and drop into TIMELESS Hell or Vajra Hell. These can never come back into the 6-realms at all.
Let us not be too attached to what we have lost. We wait patiently and see how those that cheat/hurt us fare in the eventual telly.

In the context above ,it is "showing off",thus ventilate ego and self but in the context of an examination it is proving the capability of a claim of capability in closed room would not come under "show off".
