GM defines Merit as Fu bao 福报 & Gongde 功德.
The 1st is of earthly nature & the other heavenly.
Fubao is rewards accumulated by one doing charitable act to help others without discrimination & also true heartedly without consideration or expectation of rewards.
Gongde is special rewards accumulated for heavenly usage.
Some print sutra to share so as to have fubao. If you are able to truly share sutra you printed & they benefit those that you share with, then & then you have some merits. But if you share for expected rewards then it is a motivated act & not a voluntary one.
Your expected rewards most often will not materialize.
